An Old Frame with a New Purpose

imageToday I’m going to tell you how I did this huge chalkboard. Last fall I found this huge frame with an ugly picture in it at the thrift store. It is 54 inches by 30 inches. The picture was so hideously ugly but the actual frame was beautiful and so you know when you find something beautiful of course you buy it. You will always regret it if you don’t. Anyways…I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it and it sat in my garage all winter long. I’m not sure how happy the Hubs was haha. Then my youngest son got engaged and I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I was going to make a chalkboard for the wedding. I took the canvas out and I decided to make the actual chalkboard right on the canvas. I painted the canvas with 2 coats of chalkboard paint and then just to be sure I also sprayed one more coat of chalkboard paint. So three actual coats of chalkboard paint. I was worried about painting the frame  because it was pretty ornate and I wanted to get it just right. It was kind of a cream and gold frame. Then the thought came to me to just use a dry brush and paint a grey color over the top of the original frame color. I tried that and it turned out perfect. It was just the way I wanted it, so beautiful , the way it was ment to be.

imageThe writing was done by Chelsi, Mays mom, and I just loved it. It turned out perfect for the reception. I loved it so much that I will probably never erase it. You may have asked yourself “how was it writing with chalk on the canvas?” It worked great! It wrote just like I was writing on a chalkboard that was on a piece of wood. It also erased perfectly normal. I now have this  on our front porch coupled with this darling white table. (I will tell you how I painted the table in a future post). The moral of this chalkboard story is if you find something you love and can’t live without it buy it. You  will eventually figure out something to do with it even if you have no idea when you first see it. This was a very simple  project and it took no time at all. Try something new and fun!
